About this site
My Country in the World shows where each country stands among the countries of the world, with rankings and charts of how things have changed over time. It is the English edition of 世界の中の日本 (Japan in the World), a Japanese site run by an individual.
Data retrieved: 2026-10-28 · 111 indicators · 217 countries and territories
Data sources
World Bank — World Development Indicators and Worldwide Governance Indicators, retrieved twice a month through the World Bank API (CC BY 4.0). Each page shows the indicator code with a link to the original data. "Price level (US = 1)" is calculated by this site by dividing purchasing power parity by the exchange rate.
OECD — wages, minimum wages, hours worked, productivity, the gender wage gap, employment, part-time work, trade unions, poverty, interest rates, hospital beds, nurses, social spending, pensions, class sizes, teacher salaries, tax revenue, government debt and tourist arrivals, from OECD Data Explorer through the OECD API (CC BY 4.0).
Ember — electricity generation mix and carbon intensity, from the Yearly Electricity Data (CC BY 4.0).
United Nations — population projections, ageing and median age: United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (2024). World Population Prospects 2024, Online Edition (CC BY 3.0 IGO). Values from 2024 are UN projections (medium variant).
ILO — labor income share and weekly hours: International Labour Organization. ILOSTAT database. https://ilostat.ilo.org/data/. ILO modelled estimates; projections are not used.
Nobel Prize — laureates from the Nobel Prize API (api.nobelprize.org, CC0), counted by this site by country of birth within today's borders.
PISA — average scores from the OECD PISA database, retrieved from Our World in Data (CC BY 4.0).
V-Dem — democracy indices from the V-Dem Institute's V-Dem Country-Year Dataset (the vdemdata package published by the institute). V-Dem data is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the V-Dem-derived data on this site (index values, rankings and charts) is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0 as well.
USGS — mineral production and reserves from the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Commodity Summaries (public domain, CC0). Only the main producing countries reported by the USGS are compared, and the latest year is an estimate. Because the distributor does not allow automated downloads, new editions (published each January–February) are entered by hand.

How rankings work
For each indicator, the latest value for each country is compared, as long as it falls within 5 years of the newest data for that indicator. Because the latest year differs between countries, the year is shown next to each value. Indicators where lower is considered better (such as unemployment or infant mortality) are ranked from lowest; all others from highest. Exchange rates and purchasing power parities are not ranked because their units differ by currency.
"Strengths" and "weaknesses" use only indicators with a clear better/worse direction: within the chosen group of countries, a rank in the top quarter is a strength and a rank in the bottom quarter is a weakness. An indicator is used only when at least 40% of the group has data. Which direction counts as better is this site's judgment.
The country shown first is the one in the address (for example #DEU for Germany); otherwise it is guessed from your browser's language settings, and otherwise it is the United States. Your location is not used.
Countries not covered
Economies that are not in the World Bank's country list, such as Taiwan, are not covered. Regional aggregates such as the EU or "high income" are excluded.
